To avoid academic integrity violations, make sure that you read your course syllabi and that you ask your professors before you use any AI-based tools in your courses (classroom, labs, homework, projects, reports, etc.). Every professor will have different expectations about AI-based tools. It your responsibility ensure that you are not committing any academic integrity violations.
It is your responsibility to ask to use AI.
If you choose to use AI tools without asking, you assume certain risks including serious accusations of misconduct and failure to meet the learning objectives of the class.
Rose-Hulman's Information Security Policy, which was last updated in June 2025, includes the following Information Handling section:
Section 4.2.3 Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Systems
Institutional data must not be used with generative AI systems that are not operated or explicitly authorized by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. This includes inputting, processing, or storing any Institute-owned or sensitive information in systems outside the Institute’s control. Examples include public or commercial AI platforms accessed via web browsers or APIs. Use of such systems is prohibited unless the data is fully anonymized, and the use case has been reviewed and approved by the Information Security Team. Such use constitutes data misuse and may result in unauthorized disclosure, violating Institute policy and applicable regulations.
